Tourism policies

To promote creation of new bases for tourism, Oyama and Oiso

Concept to create new bases for tourism

Kanagawa Prefecture has three major tourist spots of Yokohama, Kamakura and Hakone, which attract many visitors from home and abroad. Aiming to create additional international tourist destinations, K.P.G. certified new bases for tourism under the concept. We are promoting this policy to give boost to the regions in cooperation with the local people and governments.

In the Shonan region, the concepts of Oyama (covering parts of Isehara, Hadano and Atsugi Cities) and Oiso (Oiso Town) regions were certified as new tourism bases in February 2013.

Municipalities of both regions, citizens, organizations like NPOs, schools and companies work together to conduct their own programs in order to become international tourist resorts which attract many visitors from home and abroad.

Rediscovery of Oyama, “Heisei Oyama-ko” Project
- Feel it! Sacred mountain Oyama with a long history and spiritual comfort -

1) Mt. Oyama and Oyama-ko groups

Mt. Oyama, 1,252m high, is located on the east of the Tanzawa mountain area, spreading over Isehara, Hadano and Atsugi Cities. Local people call it Afuriyama (Mt. Afuri) or Amefuri-yama (rainy mountain). From its beautiful shape, it has also been popular as a mountain of religious faith.

From middle to late Edo period, people of the same region or profession formed groups called Oyama-ko to make a pilgrimage together, and visited Oyama enthusiastically. It is said that 200,000 people per year paid a visit from many parts of the Kanto Region for the period from 1751 to 1763. The streets those pilgrims went through were called Oyama-michi (Oyama Street). Old guideposts, reminiscent of those days, still remain on these streets which radiates outward from Mt. Oyama.

2) “Heisei Oyama-ko” Project

Oyama has attracted many people since old times. In addition to its abundant nature, the sacred mountain has various assests such as historical and cultural heritages. By reviewing these heritages and recomposing them as tourism resources focusing on their characteristics, we will create a brand-new image. What we aim for is the vibrant Oyama bustling with many visitors as it used be with Oyama-ko groups.

We will create a relaxing town anyone wants to come again that can offer various opportunities like exchanges with people, activities in nature and learning history. For the future, new projects will kick off, including improvement of transportation network, promotion of barrier-free tourist facilities and information transmission as an international tourist spot. Please look forward to seeing a new Oyama.

Regeneration of the best resort in Japan in three zones

1) Exclusive resort area in Shonan

Facing the Sagami Bay in the south and Mt. Koma and Mt. Takatori in the north, Oiso is surrounded by abundant nature. Its coastal zone has been known for the scenic beauty. Poems describing the landscape were collected in a number of ancient anthologies, such as Manyo-shu and Kokinwaka-shu. In the end of the Heian Period, the provincial capital was placed in Oiso as the center of Sagami Province. The area flourished as a post station of Tokai-do Road in the Edo Period. The wider coastal area including Oiso is now called “Shonan”, and the area name is said to have been first used in Oiso in this period. In the following Meiji Period, many of prominent figures of the political and business circles made their villas one after another in Oiso, and the area became a famous resort district.

Today, only part of these former villas is opened to the public for a limited period, but you can get a glimpse of the atmosphere of villa culture from everywhere in the town, such as the rows of pine trees seen at the Tokai-do Road area dotted with former villas.

2) Regeneration of the best resort in Japan in three zones

In 1908, Oiso was listed as the best spot on the “100 fine summer resorts in Japan” selected by Japan Newspaper Company. After over 100 years, it is going to be reborn as a new resort district.

Oiso town works on programs to rezone the town into three areas, and utilize each area’s characteristics as tourism resources. The Oiso hilly area in the north stretching from Mt. Koma through Mt. Takatori promotes tourism featuring agriculture and sports. The area along National Route 1 (former Tokai-do Road lined with pine trees), where many villas were built in the Meiji Period, is the villa culture zone. The area is focused on creation of tourist resort district by effectively utilizing the regional assets. The Koyurugi-no-hama Beach area, which commands a fine view of Kitahama Beach and Terugasaki Beach in the east, promotes regional vitalization based on the Oiso Port.

By making use of the rich tourist resources of Oiso which have been nurtured through the history, we will make it the best resort district in Japan again. You will find a new Oiso.
