Last summer, Japan battled through record heat. This summer too, is likely to be very hot! However, by taking a few simple precautions, you can reduce your risk of heatstroke. Be mindful of changes in your physical condition and remind those around you to do the same so that we can all prevent heatstroke together!
The heat stress index, or WBGT, is an index that comprehensively takes into account the factors of heat that cause heat disorders: temperature, humidity, solar radiation, etc. When this index exceeds 28, the risk of heatstroke is considered to be significantly high. When the WBGT is predicted to hit 33 or higher on the following day or on the same day, a Heat Stroke Alert is issued, and when the WBGT is predicted to hit 35 or higher on the following day, a Special Heat Stroke Alert is issued in advance.
When a Special Heat Stroke Alert is issued, public and private air-conditioned facilities designated by municipalities as “cooling shelters” are opened to the public. These facilities are also available for use to cool off at any time. Please check the following website for facilities designated as “cooling shelters” within the prefecture.

In addition, when an alert is issued, please follow these precautions:
Children and the elderly are at higher risk of heatstroke, so it is important for family members and those around them to watch out and check on them regularly. Additionally, keep it in mind that you eat balanced meals, stay hydrated, avoid excessive heat, and build a strong body to prepare for the heat as part of your regular lifestyle. Let's get through the heat together this year as well!
