Kanagawa Kenmin Hall opened in January 1975 in the international city of Yokohama as one of the largest cultural facilities in Japan. Since then, the hall has been a popular venue for performing arts and art exhibition of the international level. However, due to the aging of the facilities, the hall was closed at the end of March 2025.
Since its opening, the prefectural hall has hosted a wide range of events, from performances by top European opera houses to pop concerts and events organized by general public. Its gallery is one of the largest in the prefecture and has hosted numerous solo exhibitions of up-and-coming artists. As the center of cultural facilities in the prefecture, it has contributed to the creation and promotion of art and culture, and has carried out various projects on their own, including independent productions of opera and ballet performances, invitations of world-class cutting-edge contemporary dance performances, and special exhibitions of young artists.
For the reconstruction of the main building, a basic plan is scheduled to be formulated by the end of FY2025, after sorting out the direction and required functions of the new hall. In order to reflect the opinions of the prefectural citizens and to make the hall more familiar to them, we will hold a “Kenmin Hall Idea Contest” to solicit ideas for the functions and uses that people expect of the new hall.
Please send us your ideas such as “what you would like to do at the new hall,” and “what functions would make it easier to use,” using illustrations and a description of about 200 words. The deadline is Saturday, September 13, 2025. Anyone can apply, regardless of age, nationality, professional or amateur.
Three winners will receive a pair of tickets to the “Fantastic Gala Concert 2025” to be held at the Kamakura Performing Arts Center on Saturday, January 10, 2026. Ideas received will be reported to the committee that will consider the rebuilding policy and other issues.
In addition, a promotional video will be created using the winners’ illustrations.
Why don't you enter the contest and express your expectations for the reborn Kenmin Hall? We look forward to your ideas.
