Marine pollution caused by waste plastic has been a serious social issue on a global scale. In summer 2018, a body of baby blue whale was found washed ashore on Yuigahama Beach, Kamakura City, and we heard shocking news later on that plastic waste was discovered in the stomach of the baby whale.
Kanagawa Prefecture, the SDGs Future City, took this incident as the “massage from a whale” and issued Kanagawa No Plastic Waste Declaration in September the same year. Since then, Kanagawa Prefectural Government (K.P.G.) has been working on the activities to reduce the amount of unrecycled plastic waste to zero as early as possible, by 2030 at the latest.
We will hold two online forums on January 29, 2025, one on reduction of single-use (“one-way”) plastic waste, which is one of our prioritized measures, and the other on clean-up activity.
We are promoting various activities to bring plastic waste discharge to zero, such as reducing use of products made of too much plastic including “one-way” plastic, selecting eco-friendly products, and streamlining plastic-use by using products for a longer time, in cooperation with a wide range of companies.
We also promote clean-up activities in the riverside and beach areas to raise awareness of no littering of plastic with the cooperation from various companies. In January last year, too, we held Kanagawa Prefecture One-way Plastic Reduction Forum and Kanagawa Clean-active Online Forum on the same day, introducing various efforts.
Speakers from relevant organizations are invited for this year’s forum as well, including Hemicellulose Ltd., a company conducting R&D of bioplastic, and Kanagawa Coastal Environmental Foundation, who will give a presentation on their best practices. Speaker from JAMSTEC, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, will talk about their research to address the mystery of marine plastic. Through these presentations, we aim to contribute to reduction of single-use plastic and wider circle of cleanup activities.
Why don’t you join the forums and have a day to think about sustainable society? We look forward to your participation.
