logoKanagawa Re-Classics Project is an initiative to utilize traditional culture handed down in Kanagawa with a new idea and ‘Re’ transmit it as a form of arts and culture of the present day.  This year, the project will take place in two venues of Kawasaki City and Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama City.  Performances of long-standing tradition of “shomyo”, a classical chant of Buddhism in Japan, and various other folk performances passed down by the people of the region will be presented.

At Tsurumi Arts Center Salvia Hall in Yokohama City, performance of “Shomyo” will beposter1 presented by temples of Kanagawa Prefecture on October 26.  Shomyo means Buddhist scriptures and other vocal music chanted by priests using a variety of musical techniques in general.  You will hear it on the occasion of Buddhist services in Japan.  Shomyo carries various messages such as praise for Buddha, purification of the place and description of the purpose, and usually performed in temples.  This will be a precious opportunity to appreciate it in a theater.
