Looking back on the History of 50 years
Kanagawa Kenmin Hall

Kanagawa Prefectural Kanagawa Kenmin Hall, known as one of the largest-scale culturelogo facilities in Japan, was opened in 1975 overlooking the Port of Yokohama.  The building of six stories above kenminhall ground and one story underground has a large hall whose seating capacity is 2,500, a small hall that holds 430 people and five exhibition galleries, as well as large and small meeting rooms.  A wide range of events have taken place here, from performances of Europe’s top level opera house and pops concerts to events organized by general public.  The galleries, which boast the largest-scale in the prefecture, have often been venues of personal exhibitions of upandcoming artists.  Furthermore, Kenmin Hall has been contributing to creation and promotion of art and culture, independently producing operas and ballets, inviting world-class contemporary dance troupes and holding young artists’ exhibitions.

Kanagawa Kenmin Hall will celebrate its 50th anniversary in January 2025.  Due to facility degradation, however, it was decided that the hall would be closed at the end of March in the same year.

To expressuenomizuka our gratitude to all the people who used the hall, we will hold “Thank you from Kanagawa Kenmin Hall”, the last event before closing, to make the month a special and memorable one with various fascinating performances.

The highlight of the closing events is ballet gala performance named “Jewels from MIZUKA 2025” produced by ballet dancer UENO Mizuka, who serves as Kanagawa Goodwill Ambassador for tourism.  This performance will be conducted as the 50th anniversary event of the hall, as well.  The ballet gala will include programs of “Don Quixote” and “La Luna” produced by Maurice Béjart, which will be performed in public for the first time.  The performances to be given together with dancers who are active in the forefront at home and abroad, would be wonderful just like gems in a jewelry box.

Since Kenmin Hall has long been the venue of wind-instrument competitions, a wind-windinstrumentinstrument festival will be held as the last such event.  Other programs at the Large hall include plays by a senior theater troupe and Pop Out! MagCul Open Zone, where people can perform music, dance, street performance, etc. on a voluntary basis.

The last program is the finale concert “Thanks from Kanagawa Kenmin Hall”, performed by Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra and mixed chorus.

Kanagawa Kenmin Hall has been widely known to the citizens. We hope many people would come to see the performances to crown the last one month before closing.
