Many of you may have used a “roadside station” during your travels in Japan. Roadside stations are facilities set up by municipalities and registered with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. They serve as rest facilities that combine three functions: a “rest function” for road users, an “information hub function” for road users and local residents, and a “community collaboration promotion function” to create vibrant communities. There are over 1,200 roadside stations across the country, but until now, there were only four of them in Kanagawa located in the central and western parts of the prefecture.
On July 7, the first roadside station in the Shonan area,“Shonan Chigasaki,” will have its grand opening. The station is easy to access from National Route 134, the Sagami Longitudinal Road, and the Chigasaki Kaigan Interchange of the Shin-Shonan By-pass, and is expected to serve as a gateway to the Shonan area. In addition to basic facilities such as parking lots, restrooms, and information center, it is equipped with a variety of amenities to provide a relaxing space where visitors can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Chigasaki City.
How about enjoying a shopping experience only available at “Shonan Chigasaki” Roadside Station? You can find fresh local vegetables, meat, and seafood, as well as goods that remind you of the sea, and other specialty items. Also, unique craft beers, processed foods and sweets made with local ingredients are perfect as souvenirs or treats for yourself.
Additionally, you can find a wide variety of gourmet food made with local ingredients nurtured by the sea, greenery, and climate of Chigasaki. There is a home-grown ice cream store, a shop offering Hawaiian food & sweets that evokes the atmosphere of Chigasaki’s sister city, Honolulu, and a seafood restaurant serving dishes made with seafood from the fishing port in the city. You can even find a popular local B-class gourmet food. There is also a kids' play area where you can play safely with your children, and a dog park for small dogs. At “Shonan Chigasaki” roadside station, everyone can enjoy an active day out, from adults to children, and even dogs.
Besides its practical roles for drivers, the roadside station serves also as a community hub where you can feel the breeze of Shonan and the charm of Chigasaki to the fullest. Why not take a trip there and spend a relaxing time?
