Kamakura
Kamakurabori Yo-do
This Kamakura sculpture store was established in 1606. Kamakura sculptures began with the influence of the sculptures that were introduced from China about 800 years ago. The Buddhist teachers of Kamakura started using the technique to make Buddhist altar equipment and furniture for Zen Buddhist temples. The merchandise products are sculpted in the traditional way out of wood by the shop’s craftsmen, and are then carefully painted with a lacquer finish. High quality Kamakura sculptures have a rare luxurious feeling and are used for celebrations, such as marriage, and return gifts.
