Daichinji

This temple is part of the Rinzai sect of the Myoshinji school. The Kamakura shogunate’s first shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo, built the “Sakura Imperial Palace”, “Tsubaki Imperial Palace”, and “Peach Imperial Palace” (=”Misaki’s Three Imperial Palaces”) in Misaki. Daichinji is built on the remains of the “Tsubaki Imperial Palace”. Minamoto no Yoritomo’s concubine, 妙悟尼, resided in the “Tsubaki Imperial Palace”, and it is said that during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) there were many tsubaki trees growing around the building and is therefore called the “Tsubaki Imperial Palace”.
