
Kanagawa Prefecture is located next to Tokyo. Access to the area is excellent because of its proximity to Tokyo International Airport—commonly known as Haneda Airport—as well as the Tokaido Shinkansen Line and Tomei Expressway, which both run through Kanagawa Prefecture and connect Tokyo and Osaka.
Kanagawa is also considered part of the Tokyo metropolitan region, which accounts for a third of Japan’s population and 37 percent of its economy. Bolstered by industries that possess sophisticated technological capabilities as well as a large human resource pool, Kanagawa enjoys constant growth and offers much that will appeal to businesses.
Kanagawa Prefecture has a population of 9.06 million, second only to the capital city of Tokyo. Compared to other major Asian metropolises, Kanagawa has about the same number of citizens as Bangkok, Thailand. Kanagawa Prefecture’s GDP was $307.6 billion in 2008, on a par with Denmark’s $310.1 billion and Argentina’s $308.7 billion, and greater than Thailand’s $263.8 billion.

There are 275 foreign firms headquartered in Kanagawa Prefecture. However, if plants and sales offices are included, the number of foreign-affiliated firms located here actually comes to 418. Based on the number of company headquarters, the prefecture boasts a concentration second only to Tokyo.
