Setsubun” Bean-scattering Festival of Samukawa Shrine    

      Bean scattering is a long-standing custom in Japan.  It is believed that an evil spirit arises at the turn of the seasons, and we can drive away the evil spirit and disasters by throwing soy beans.  Here at Samukawa Shrine, which is considered the highest-ranked shrine in the Sagami area, bean-scattering takes place on a big scale every year.  In the roll of the drums, many people scatter soy beans seeking good luck. Setsubunis a representative event of early spring in Japan, which is very lively and full of excitement.

Spectacular Celebration of New Year at Yokohama Chinatown

Yokohama Chinatown, which is the largest Chinatown in Japan, holds a festival to celebrate New Year in the lunar calendar.  Chinese people have a custom to mark the start of the year with gorgeous events, and this festival was started so that people can also enjoy them here in Yokohama.  This is the 32nd year to hold the event introducing traditional culture of China, such as dynamic lion and dragon dance performances and parade of people in imperial costume.  Today, it has become a tourism highlight of Yokohama.  The Chinatown bustles with people enjoying various programs of celebration, between February 16 and March 2 this year.

華やかに祝う春節 横浜中華街

日本最大の規模を誇る横浜中華街。今年も「春節」を開催します。中国では旧暦の正月を盛大にお祝いする風習があり、これを横浜でも楽しめるようにと始まったのです。華やかな獅子舞や龍舞、皇帝衣装のパレードなど中国の伝統文化を紹介して32年目を迎えます。今や横浜の代表的観光行事となりました。今年は2月16日から3月2日まで、様々なイベントが行われます。(写真提供 横浜中華街発展会協同組合 http://www.chinatown.or.jp/)
