Beach Monitoring System Keeps You Safe

Kanagawa has many attractive beaches.  Now that summer is in full swing, the beaches are crowded with families and friends every day.

AIcamera1As the number of visitors increases, that of water-related accidents increases as well.  At the especially popular beaches of Yuigahama and Zaimokuza in Kamakura City, Beach Watching system has been introduced to prevent accidents.  The system, equipped with AI, analyzes the footage of a camera installed on the beach and detects dangerous rip currents.

Rip current is an extremely strong current that carries people out to sea from the shore.  It is a highly dangerous phenomenon.  To address this, Kamakura City Government installed a safety system with a grant funded by the Nippon Foundation and the cooperation of Japan Lifesaving Association and Chuo University.  Web cameras are installed along the coast, and AI detects the occurrence of rip currents and people seeking rescue, notifying beachgoers and lifeguards.

Since 2025, a new application of “Water Safety Eye” has been introduced to the Beach Monitoring System.  If you access this app with your smartphone and point the camera towards the sea, you can obtain information on dangerous spots for rip currents, and other necessary information such as locations of monitoring stations and public toilets.  Please see the details from the link below.

Recently, due to the effects of global warming, heatstroke has become a serious problem even on beaches.  To prevent heatstroke under the scorching sun, the city government has set up water dispensers available to the public.  The water dispensers are offered by Water Stand Co. that has signed an agreement with Kamakura City.  This initiative aims to prevent heatstroke and encourage the use of reusable water bottles.

Beaches are hugely popular summer destinations, but they always carry risks.  Utilizing AI technology that detects dangers, let’s prevent dangers and create safe beaches that everyone can enjoy.
