Cooperation with People in Kanagawa Prefecture

“The Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention” made by UNESCO, also encourages the State Parties to embark on inscription on the World Heritage in cooperation with not only the administration but also the various parties concerned such as local communities. 

So far, the cooperation with the administration has been advanced mainly by citizens in Kamakura. Concretely, “the Kamakura World Heritage Inscription Promotion Council” has been active, composed of more than 80 parties with the participation of a wide range of parties such as civic organizations, religious circles, associations related to commerce and industry, educational institutions, and Kamakura city. And this comes to be big strength for the promotion of inscription. The activities involve its bulletin publication, preparation/distribution of Maps for public relations, holding symposiums and lectures, producing advertising posters for the trains of Enoden line. In these ways, the council attracts publicity and gives enlightenment to promote inscription on the World Heritage. 

In addition, junior and senior high school students from the local schools, such as Kanagawa Prefectural Kamakura High School and Kamakura Jogakuin Junior and Senior High School, actively promote “Kamakura Studies” that is to study “Kamakura, Home of the Samurai” more deeply, closely related to the area. The next generation who bears certain succession of the Heritage to the future, has grown steadily. 

Furthermore, neighborhood councils and high schools in Kamakura city have continued steady volunteer activities such as mowing in the nominated properties. 

From now on, we think it is important to protect and hand down the properties as common properties of the whole people in the prefecture, as well as to materialize inscription on the World Heritage with the further understanding and cooperation of the whole people in the prefecture, by widening the range of cooperation to the cities of Yokohama and Zushi with the axis of the activities of Kamakura city.
